A panel of experts will describe the current racial disparities in healthcare, treatment of patients and life expectancy and what we might do about it. Join us to learn from:

Martine Hackett, PhD, associate professor in the Public Health and Community Health at Hofstra University, will present research on racial disparities in health outcomes in Nassau County, with a focus on maternal mortality, showing how one’s zip code can be as much a predictor of health status/health outcomes as any other health metric.

Dana Sussman, JD-MPH, Deputy Executive Director of National Advocates for Pregnant Women, an organization advancing the rights of all pregnant people, will discuss how discriminatory practices such as drug testing lead to community distrust, inappropriate police and child-protective services involvement, and disparate health outcomes. She will identify creative solutions to combat these practices across the healthcare continuum.

Jim Kinsey, CACPF, CGBC, is VP of Continuum of Care Services at Planetree International, which provides education and information to healthcare organizations to create person-centered care in healing environments. He will focus on implicit bias (e.g., racism, ageism, sexism, ableism) and what can be done about it by healthcare practitioners, patients, communities, and concerned citizens.
