On Tuesday, November 7, New Yorkers will head to the polls for Election Day 2017.
Local elected officials oversee important aspects of our every day lives—education, zoning, and sanitation, to name just a few—and local elections are often decided by slim margins, which means we have an opportunity to make a real difference in our communities. This also means that we have a responsibility to be informed voters and cast our ballots in favor of candidates and propositions we understand and believe in.
First, take a look at the list of candidates running for local office in Nassau County and Manhattan. As always, we recommend that you do your own research to determine which candidates’ stances most closely align with your values and goals. In addition, we’ve sent a list of 5 questions addressing crucial issues facing our community to candidates running in the Rockville Centre area to assist you in making election day decisions:
- The upcoming election includes 3 propositions—can you comment on the NYS Constitutional Convention? Is this a potential opportunity or potential crisis for New York State?
- What programs would you promote to address the current opioid crisis in terms of law enforcement, mental health care, and community involvement?
- What policies would you promote to ensure that Nassau County students are provided with a quality education regardless of race, disability, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or immigration status? Please be as specific as possible.
- Echoing Gov. Cuomo’s call for water testing and a proposed $2 billion fund for clean water infrastructure, how will you be proactive and support the concerns of residents? The Suffolk County Water Authority already is building an ultraviolet reactor for neutralization of 1, 4 dioxane. Will you look at that example for Nassau County and how will you allocate funding to implement water treatment?
- Corruption has had a direct impact on our property taxes and the quality and effectiveness of Nassau County services. How do you propose maintaining and/or improving the quality and effectiveness of county services without increasing the tax burden on its residents, so that we, and our children, can continue to afford to live here?
